Matt Bruno’s job can be depressing. As coordinator for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning programming at American University’s Center for Diversity and Inclusion, he has helped suicidal students as well as students kicked out of their homes for not being straight. Bruno knows that many young LGBTQ people face extremely difficult circumstances.
But in recent years he is noticing a distinctive trend: An increasing number of students and college administrations are becoming more supportive of gay rights. Colleges are adding LGBTQ-related degree options, changing health care plans, and providing increased services for students.
